Disney World

ລັດ Colorado Jared Polis (D) ເອີ້ນວ່າ on presidential candidate and Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) to engage in a “friendly wager” ahead of the NBA finals between the Denver Nuggets and Miami Heat, but he jokingly proposed an unusual prize: moving Walt Disney World—whose parent company is feuding with DeSantis—to Colorado if the Nuggets win.

Polis tweeted at DeSantis and Disney Tuesday afternoon, two days ahead of game one of the series, suggesting if the Nuggets take the title, “Disney World will move to Colorado, the ACTUAL happiest place on earth to do business, have fun, and be free!”

Even though DeSantis can’t force Disney World to move to Colorado or any other state—wager or no wager—the tweet from Polis comes as DeSantis is in the middle of a months-long war with Disney, which just canceled an ambitious $1 billion project in Florida that would have created more than 2,000 jobs.

Neither DeSantis nor Disney has responded to Polis’ offer on Twitter, and Forbes has reached out to both for comment.

Wagers between governors of teams in large sporting events aren’t unusual—and are usually accepted—but usually focus on exchanging a local delicacy or gift depending on the champion. In 2014, for example, the mayors of New York and Los Angeles bet on the Stanley Cup winner, and the loser had to sing a song about the winner’s city on Jimmy Kimmel Live. But Polis’ wager comes as many eyes are on DeSantis, who just formally announced his Republican presidential bid and has been feuding with Disney for months. The battle between DeSantis and Disney began after the company objected to a Florida law known by its critics as “Don’t Say Gay.” GOP officials in the state later stripped Disney of its influence over a special district governing Disney World’s territory, replacing it with a district led by DeSantis appointees—and when those appointees voted to get rid of a development deal with the company, Disney sued DeSantis and accused the state of a “targeted campaign of government retaliation.”

This isn’t the first time Polis has courted Disney on Twitter. In April, Polis tweeted that Colorado was “ready for Mountain Disneyland,” adding that Colorado wouldn’t “meddle” in business affairs. The same day, as DeSantis was feuding with Disney, Polis also tweeted that he would “grant Mickey and Minnie full asylum in Colorado.”

After the latest—and largest—move from Disney to pull its billion dollar project, a number of other states have offered the company a new home. North Carolina State Sen. Michael Garrett (D) filed a bill that would allow Disney to open a theme park and other amenities there. “I welcome The Walt Disney Company and all other businesses seeking refuge from the culture war madness currently gripping the great state of Florida,” Garrett said in a statement. Last month, former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley (R)—who is vying for the 2024 GOP presidential nomination alongside DeSantis—suggested the company consider her home state, which she called “not woke, but … not sanctimonious about it either.” And a county judge in Texas offered Disney a new home as well, tweeting that he would welcome Disney to Fort Bend County if they needed a new home while facing “attacks from the modern day political extremists like (DeSantis).”
