Display Supply Chain Consultants, a marketing research firm, reveals that demand for display technologies for displays used in headsets is triggered by the rapid growth of augmented reality and virtual reality (AR/VR).

In an updated forecast released in the Biannual Augmented and Virtual Reality Display Technologies and Market Report, the company forecasts $9.3B as an annual revenue for AR/VR displays in 2027, representing 58.8% as a compound annual growth rate (CAGR).

DSCC is yet confident that more display shipments and revenues will be generated by AR In comparison to see-through AR. Meta, in a step forward, has added the feature of passthrough AR on the Quest 2, while more headsets can offer this feature in the near future.

In addition, DSCC believes that this year will be a significant year for AR/VR, with display panel shipments will grow at a rate of double-digit. LCD (liquid crystal display) technology will experience the majority of the growth. LCD is currently being used in most VR headsets like Pico Neo 3 Link or Meta Quest 2.

LCD technology has proved to be the top contender for integration into AR/VR displays now. The technology possesses the ability to acquire high pixel densities above 1000 PPI. Furthermore, with the backlight on only about 10% of the time, LCDs will enable the use of a short duty cycle.

This will help reduce motion blur and the motion sickness experienced by some users with it.

MiniLED backlights will be deployed to enhance contrast by the future LCDs in VR headsets, according to DSCC. The firm also revealed this year’s plans for Meta to launch a new VR headset with two MiniLED LCD panels. Pancake optics that are relatively smaller and lighter than most Fresnel lenses on the majority of headsets today will be featured in the LCD panels.

AMOLED (Active-matrix organic light-emitting diode) is the competing technology in AR/VR headsets. But, over the past two years, AMOLED wasn’t designed for VR headsets because of its limiting pixel density of 615 ppi since design engineers choose high-resolution LCD panels, according to DSCC.
