Jaime Munguia Vs. Gonzalo Coria: ບໍ່ລົງຮອຍກັນ, ບັນທຶກ, ການຄາດເດົາ

While the boxing world waits for Jaime Munguia to fight any kind A-level (or even a B- or C-level) fighter, he’s got different plans on Saturday: he’s fighting an opponent in Gonzalo Coria that hardly anybody has ever heard of and, presumably, has next to no chance to pull off the upset. It’s yet another disappointing step in Munguia’s still-promising career. Here’s everything you need to know about Jaime Munguia vs. Gonzalo Coria, including the odds, their records and a prediction on who will win.

Since Munguia has moved up to middleweight, he’s fought the likes of Tureano Johnson (a solid opponent), Kamil Szemereta (at least some people had heard of him), Gabriel Rosado (a solid journeyman) and two untested opponents. He has yet to face anybody in the top-30 of the Boxrec rankings— Munguia is ranked No. 4—and Coria checks in at No. 68.

A Munguia showdown against Gennadiy Golovkin would be fantastic— “At this point in my career, we need a fight with GGG. It would help me with my boxing. It would help me with my career,” Munguia told me in April 2021—but really, a fight against anybody in the top-10 would be a welcome change.

The good news for Munguia is that he’s fighting in his home country of Mexico for the second time in his past three fights, so the crowd should be excited to see him. And considering this will be his fourth fight in the past 12 months, he’s at least staying in shape for whatever is to come in 2023.

“We are prepared for this new challenge, and I’m excited to fight for the first time in Guadalajara,” Munguia said recently. “We have never stopped training. Coria is not a simple rival. He will want to come and beat me in my home country. Once we get through this test, I hope to kickstart 2023 with a big fight that all my fans are waiting for.”

His latest underwhelming opponent, though, isn’t necessarily Munguia’s fault. As ສາກມວຍ notes, Munguia had planned to fight the solid John Ryder, a man who nearly beat super middleweight champion Callum Smith in 2019 and is coming off his biggest win vs. Daniel Jacobs, in October. Munguia also had been in negotiations to take on Jermall Charlo this past summer, but like the Ryder fight, that fell through.

Munguia’s fans aren’t the only ones frustrated by his opponents. He also wants more.

“It’s not the year I expected, but I am fighting for the third time in 2022,” he told Boxing Scene. “I’m gaining more experience with each fight, and staying active helps me continue to grow as a fighter. I was training for a big fight, but unfortunately, it didn’t line up for me.

“I really hope that 2023 brings a fight, but I am grateful to once again embrace and fight in front of all my people.”

Jaime Munguia vs. Gonzalo Coria records

Before his foray into the middleweight division, Munguia had some nice victories at junior middleweight, including a knockout victory against Sadam Ali to win a world title and a solid title defense against Liam Smith. Munguia is now 40-0 (32 KOs), but he’s still searching for his signature victory.

If you were looking for a recognizable win on the resume of Coria (21-5, 8 KOs), I wish you the best of luck. In his two biggest fights thus far, Coria was knocked out in the second round by Zhanibek Alimkhanuly (who won on the Showtime main event from last week) in 2020 and was decisioned by Fiodor Czerkaszyn (who had a nice victory earlier this month vs. Nathaniel Gallimore) in 2021.

Jaime Munguia vs. Gonzalo Coria prediction

This will be a Munguia wipeout. For me, it’s a safe bet to wager on a Munguia stoppage, and I think it’ll happen in the first half of the fight. Say, Munguia by stoppage in the fourth round.
