Ranbir Kapoor’s latest release, ຊາມເຊຣາ, had a disappointing show at the ticket windows in India and collected mere $5.1 million in the first week of the release. Apart from Kapoor, the film also featured Vaani Kapoor and Sanjay Dutt in lead roles.

Directed by Karan Malhotra (who also made the 2012 Hindi film Agneepath), ຊາມເຊຣາ collected mere $3.9 million over the first weekend of its release on July 22. After a dismal opening day collection of $1.28 million, ຊາມເຊຣາ saw a slow rise in collections over Saturday and Sunday – it earned $1.31 million on the second day while the third day collections totaled $1.37 million. The film has been made on an estimated budget of $18.8 million. ຊາມເຊຣາ released in more than five thousand screens across the globe.

ຊາມເຊຣາ featured Kapoor in a double role. He essays the role of father and son who lead the rebellion of an Indian tribe enslaved by the British. Mounted as a typical Bollywood entertainer, ຊາມເຊຣາ fails to acquire the massy quality that some major blockbusters have had this year (Pushpa The Rise ແລະ KGF ບົດທີ 2, for example). The film ends up caricaturing the very heroes and villains it wants to celebrate.

Meanwhile, Rajat Kapoor’s crowd-funded film RK/RKay, made on an estimated budget of mere $0.5 million, roughly earned $7,577 in the first week of the release. The film had a limited release and did not get many shows, even in urban centers of the metro cities in India.

The last week of July is a power-packed weekend for Indian showbiz as two major films hit theatres and a few new ones also make their digital premiere. Mohit Suri’s Ek Villain ກັບຄືນ and Sudeep-starrer ວິກລັດ ໂຣນາ had theatrical releases on July 29. Janhvi Kapoor-starrer ໂຊກດີ Jerry also landed online on Friday. The second season of Netflix original Masaba Masaba also premiered on Friday.
