After beating Vasiliy Lomachenko in 2020, Teofimo Lopez became a boxing superstar, blasting his way onto the pound for pound list and forcing people to admit that he was probably the best lightweight in the world. Twenty-two months after his monumental win, though, Lopez, coming off an upset loss and trying out a new weight division, finds himself resuming a career where there are now so many questions. The result was a split decision loss, one of the biggest upsets of 2021.

Since then, Lopez has been dealing with injuries (he actually had a tear in his esophagus before the Kambosos fight) and his mental health. But now he says he’s in a better place.

“I meditate, man,” Lopez told Yahoo Sports. “I get closer. I connect with the universe. I connect with God. I just do all those things that are going to help my sanity, especially in today’s world, where everything’s all on the phone, you know? So I take my time to really enjoy the fruits of God’s labor. You know, I really come out to that point and I just connect more with, I just ground myself more.”

Lopez was one of the standouts at 135 pounds, but it was no secret that he’d eventually move up to the 140-pound junior welterweight class. And while fights against lightweights like Devin Haney, Gervonta “Tank” Davis or even a rematch vs. Lomachenko would bring him plenty of money if he had stayed put, he also has options at 140 pounds, including undisputed champ Josh Taylor, Regis Prograis and Jose Ramirez.

“I’ve had a lot of complications, but we’re looking toward the future and are on to bigger and better things,” Lopez said. “I’m here to take over the 140-pound division, just like I did at 135. Like always, I’m going to bring excitement to the sport of boxing.”

Does Campa have any chance to win? It seems unlikely. Even working with respected trainer Manny Robles, who helped Vergil Ortiz Jr. to a solid victory last week in their first fight together, Campa has never faced anybody near the skill level of Lopez.

Said Campa: “I believe I can be a force at 140 pounds, and it’s up to me to show that on August 13.”

Seems unlikely, but we’ll see on Saturday night.

Unsurprisingly, Lopez is an enormous betting favorite with odds set ຢູ່ -3300 (bet $3,300 to win $100), while Campa is a +1100 underdog (win $1,100 on a $100 wager). Earlier in the week, Lopez was -2500, so even at those wide odds, money has continued to come in on him. You can skip both money lines. I wouldn’t even bother taking Lopez at -350 to win by KO/TKO. Instead, I’d probably go with Lopez to win by stoppage in rounds 3-4 at +333 or Lopez to win by stoppage in rounds 5-6 at +275. But really, none of that provides great value, so you might be better off not wagering on this fight.

Although he’s only had 17 pro fights, Lopez (16-1, 12 KOs) has had some big wins, including Lomachenko, Richard Commey and Masayoshi Nakatani. Despite his big power, he’s only scored one knockout in his last four fights, so it’ll be interesting to see how his punches affect fighters at the 140-pound limit.

Campa is 34-1-1 with 23 KOs, but the vast majority of his fights have come in Mexico against opponents you’ve never heard of. His lone loss came to an 11-8-1 fighter named Carlos Jimenez in 2017, and though he’s won eight of his last nine fights (the other being a draw), it’s hard to gauge how good he is because his opponents are so unknown. His 2015 unanimous decision victory against Aaron Herrera might be his best win.

I’d expect Lopez to be aggressive and try for the early knockout just so he can begin to wash away the disappointment of the past year. It’s unclear what Campa’s skill level is, but I don’t think he’ll give Lopez many problems (and if he does, boy, that’d be an indictment of where Lopez’s career currently stands). I think Lopez will look impressive and score the stoppage in the fifth round.
